T
his Lesson we’re going to explore How to SAVE Your TEETH & GUMS! This is a very personal topic for me because the first person to alert me to the value of PRIMAL foods was a dentist — Dr. Weston A. Price, DDS.

It was his book; Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, first published in 1939 that originally gave me the courage and knowledge to fight back, take charge and try and heal diabetes on my own.

Dr. Price was a practicing dentist and also a researcher who was determined to get to the bottom of dental disease. He practiced from 1890 to 1930 in Cleveland. In this forty-year period he noticed a distinct increase in dental conditions including cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease.

What was particularly striking was that children’s teeth began to get crowded. Overbites and underbites started to appear. Today, this is quite common, with many children visiting the orthodontist and getting braces. However, in 1890, at the beginning of Dr. Price’s practice, most children had straight, perfect teeth.

Being a student of nutrition, Dr. Price noticed that simultaneous with the increase in dental abnormalities, the food supply became increasingly processed and refined. When he investigated, he found that most of the nutrients are processed out to extend shelf-life. Insects and bacteria cannot survive on these bankrupt foods, which benefits the food industry but robs you of the nutrients you need for health.

This insight prompted Dr. Price to travel over 150,000 miles to visit 14 racial groups worldwide in order to find the protective factors in their PRIMAL foods. He observed what so-called "primitive" people were eating and what their "civilized" relatives were eating. Then he compared the health status of each. After visiting scores of tribal groups, he found that in every instance those members of traditional societies that were eating their native, PRIMAL foods had no dental decay, healthy, intelligent children, strong sturdy bodies, easy childbirth, and vigor well into old age.

In stark contrast, those tribal members who had moved to seaside towns and were now eating canned, package, processed foods had massive dental decay, tuberculosis, diabetes, heart disease, weak bodies and difficult childbirth.

One of the first diseases to develop was dental decay. In fact, since the condition of gums and the teeth are readily apparent, it was noticed that where there was dental disease there also existed deterioration of the entire body.

Dental decay is the first symptom of whole body degeneration.

Of Whole Body Degeneration!
Dr. Price was not alone is his assessment of the seriousness of dental disease.

"The Honorable J.A. Young, Minister of Health of New Zealand strongly emphasizes that the insidiousness of the effect of dental disease lies in the fact that it is the forerunner of other far-reaching disturbances

…Sir George Newman, Principal Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health in Great Britain, has said that ‘dental disease is one of the chief, if not the chief, cause of ill health in people.’"— pp. 12.

A scathing opinion on this subject was given by Dr. Earnest A. Hooton of Harvard University in Chapter VII of his book, Apes, Men and Morons.

"I firmly believe that the health of humanity is at stake, and that, unless steps are taken to discover preventatives of tooth infection and correctives of dental deformation, the course of human evolution will lead downward to extinction…

The facts that we must face are, in brief, that human teeth and the human mouth have become, possibly under the influence of civilization, the foci of infections that undermine the entire bodily health of the species…"

Dr. Hooton further states:

"…Let us go to the ignorant savage, consider his way of eating, and be wise. Let us cease pretending that tooth-brushes and tooth-paste are any more important than shoe-brushes and shoe-polish. It is store food which has given us store teeth." — pp. 12.
