"Protect Your Kidneys, Legs, Nerves Heart & Eyes With The PRIMAL Diabetic Diet & High Dose Fish-Oil!" ![]() I just ran across one of the most profound health books I’ve ever read. I don’t agree with everything it advocates, but overall I believe what Dr. Barry Sears promotes in: The Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil,
His advice has vast potential to help stabilize your blood sugar levels. This book may also hold the key to help you prevent or banish a host of diabetic complications.
What impressed me from the start is that the foundation of his high-dose fish oil therapy has its beginnings in a PRIMAL diet. As you know, I believe that all successful nutritional therapies must have their roots in whole, PRIMAL FOODS.
Let me give you a glimpse of the reasoning behind this discovery.According to Dr. Sears, paleontologists have determined that our thinking brains evolved about 150,000 years ago in the Great Rift Valley of Eastern Africa. In this new environment, very different than either the grassy savannah or the leafy jungle, early humans began to consume a new PRIMAL food — shellfish — in prodigious quantities. Shellfish found along the shores of these African lakes consume algae that contain essential fatty acids (EFA’s) such as docosahexaenic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The shellfish concentrate these algae-derived EFA’s in their body tissues and thus our immediate ancestors got a heavy dose of EFA’s for many thousands of years.
Fortified with this new food, Dr. Sears believes that "the development of the frontal cortex (the site of the thinking in the brain) began to accelerate, which allowed cognitive skills to explode."
Then beginning about 100,000 years ago, many humans left Africa and started to populate the earth. As our ancestors spread throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas and the Pacific Basin, they further developed their hunting skills to now catch all manner of seafood including fish. Since fish are near the top of the food chain that begins with algae, they concentrate even more of these EFA’s in their body tissues than shellfish.
According to Dr. Sears, the brains of all humans alive today evolved while eating shellfish and fish brimming with essential fatty acids.
Nutritionists, Anthropologists
And Archeologists Agree!
Is this theory concerning the evolution of our thinking brains for real — or is it just a "fish tale"?
At the annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, experts gathered to debate the birth of thinking in early humans. "A shore-based diet was essential for the evolution of human brains." Professor Stephen Cunnane of Toronto University said as he addressed the meeting.
Professor Cunnane contends that only the consumption of fish and shellfish could have supplied our immediate ancestors with the pre-formed fatty acids that are absolutely crucial to brain development. These fatty acids are scarce in other foods — including meat.
One fatty acid — DHA makes up almost 60% of the dry weight of your brain. DHA is critical for the development of brain cells. The other fatty acid, EPA is essential for whole body health. Fish and fish oil is rich in both In fact, DHA is so essential to brain function that it is excreted through the placenta as food for the developing fetus and also into the breast milk to ensure brain growth in the newborn infant.
So What?
Whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, otters, bears and other mammals eat lots of fish — how come they don’t rule the earth? Three reasons. First, they don’t have hands and can’t manipulate tools. Secondly, like all primates, we had the beginnings of a frontal cortex even before consuming EFA’s. And lastly, we were already eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables that supplied a constant flood of blood glucose to our brains. As PRIMAL foods, fruits and vegetables are also exceedingly rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, antioxidants, phyto-nutrients, cofactors and subfactors. It’s well known that about 70 percent of your blood glucose supply is devoted to feeding your brain.
With this constant fuel source, the frontal cortex portion of our brains was able to fully develop when exposed to high levels of essential fatty acids (EFA’s).
